Dolls

Finding the right baby doll or collectible doll

Dolls are a classic childhood toy, particularly for girls. But it's important to make the distinction between collectable dolls and toy dolls. Collectible dolls are often more delicate and more valuable than dolls meant for play, so they require special consideration and care. Toy dolls, on the other hand, are designed for use, so it is important to make sure that the one you choose is safe, durable and, above all, one your child will love.

Collectible Dolls

Porcelain dolls are a classic collectible. Madame Alexander dolls are probably the most popular, but Lee Middleton dolls and Marie Osmond dolls are also big sellers. Boyds dolls are probably lesser known than their counterparts, Boyds bears, but they offer the same fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. The same is true of Precious Moments Co dolls, which are styled after the company's figurines.

Ashton Drake dolls are now mostly made of vinyl and silicone, but the company still offers a porcelain collection. It is also the purveyor of a collection by Gene Marshall, who is so popular that people often refer to one of his creations simply as "a Gene doll".

Keep in mind that there is a difference between the modern porcelain doll and an antique doll made of porcelain. Antique dolls are older dolls originally intended as toys, whereas modern porcelain dolls are generally designed as collector's items.

Vintage dolls are also older dolls (though not as old as antiques – usually just from the last couple of decades) that were originally intended for use but then became collectible toys. A collectible Barbie doll is a good example of this.

Other popular types of collectible dolls include nesting dolls, Chinese dolls and even bobble head dolls!

Finding Collectible Dolls

Searching online is a great way to find rare collectible dolls, whether you're looking for limited edition dolls or a bobble head doll of your favorite athlete. By shopping around, you can even seek out deals on hard-to-find collectibles like Gene dolls, an Annalee doll or a limited edition Lee Middleton doll. You may even be able to find that last nesting doll necessary to complete a set! The Internet is one of the collector's greatest resources.

Toy Dolls

Collectible dolls may be beautiful, but if you're just looking for a good toy doll, there are plenty of options there, too.

Baby dolls are a fun way to let children play grownup, especially if it's a life like baby doll. A realistic baby doll that laughs, cries, and moves helps make your child's play parenting more interactive.

If you're looking for a baby doll that's just for fun, why not go with one of the classics: a Cabbage Patch doll, a Kewpie doll or a rag doll with a big smile and crazy hair.

When your child outgrows her doll toy or is too old for a cloth doll, look for dolls that appeal to slightly older girls with stylish clothing and hair and fun doll accessories. Barbie dolls are the classic in this category, but the newer American Girl doll may just be the wave of the future.
