Kid Friendly Hotels

Locating the best hotels for children

Traveling with kids can be exhausting, and whether it's just a place to rest for the night or it's your home away from home throughout your vacation, finding the right hotel is essential to keeping your vacation enjoyable.

Not all hotels are created equal. Sure, we know the difference between a Super 8 and The Four Seasons, but many parents don't realize that not all hotels are family-friendly. In order to make sure your accommodations will welcome you and your kids, you'll want to make sure you're booking kid-friendly hotels.

How to Distinguish Child-Friendly Hotels

Although human rights laws in many countries preclude hotels from expressly forbidding children, there are many hotels that deliberately gear their amenities toward adults only. Family hotels, on the other hand, make a point of offering services that will appeal to children and their parents. For example, some hotels offer waterslides or wading pools for children, and many have games rooms or arcades where children can play. A number of hotels also offer daycare services or daytime kids programming to occupy children while their parents go sightseeing or enjoy a meal together.

Some hotels explicitly bill themselves as family or kid-friendly hotels, while others simply let their services do the talking for them. If you really want to be sure and you can't find anything that says "child-friendly," it never hurts to call the hotel and ask.

How to Find the Best Hotels for Children

The Best Western chain of hotels has earned its place at the top of the kid-friendly hotels list by allowing children 12 and under to stay free. Some even extend that courtesy to anyone under age 18.

Fairmont and Choice hotels are two of the other best hotels for kids. Fairmont hotels offer a variety of family packages, and you'll save on food as well as lodgings: kids under 5 eat free at their restaurants, and children 5 to 12 get a 50 percent discount. Choice hotels offer free accommodations for children under 18, and their rooms provide a fair amount of space to add in a rollaway or crib.

The Holiday Inn, Westin, and Embassy Suites hotel chains are also known for their kid-friendly atmospheres and an array of discounts meant to make them more affordable for families.
