Lake Tahoe Vacation

Your guide to Lake Tahoe travel with kids

Although many people think of Lake Tahoe primarily as a ski destination, this unique destination can actually provide family-friendly fun year-round.

Both North and South Lake Tahoe are excellent destinations for summer vacations as well as winter ones. In the warmer months, these destinations offer golf, fishing, biking, hiking, boating, camping, and a number of other outdoor activities, not to mention the indoor activities such as dining, shopping, gambling, and getting pampered at the spa.

Popular Lake Tahoe Family Travel Destinations

One of Lake Tahoe's greatest attractions is its many casinos, but these aren't exactly a selling point for Lake Tahoe travel with kids. Save the gambling for your next adult vacation and check out these kid-friendly destinations instead:

Many resorts also have day and half-day programs for kids, giving you time to check out the casinos, get a treatment at the spa, or take one of the more challenging hiking or biking trails.

Where to Stay on Your Lake Tahoe Family Vacation

Lake Tahoe is the land of family ski resorts, and most of these operate as simply family resorts year-round, offering hiking, biking, horseback riding, water sports, and a variety of other outdoor activities—not to mention spas for a little indoor relaxation.

Many resorts offer great Lake Tahoe vacation packages for both winter and summer, with discounts on accommodations, meals, rentals (bike, canoe, kayak, etc.), tours, and other attractions. These may come with a catch, such as specific travel times (generally weekdays at the very beginning or end of the season, with blackouts during the high season), but if you've got the flexibility, they can be a great way to save money and still have a fabulous vacation.

Lake Tahoe vacation rentals are also popular accommodations. Despite the many resorts, hotels, campgrounds, and bed and breakfasts, vacation rental properties continue to boom. To get a prime location, be sure to book early.
